چکیده

Nonlinear Processes Geophysics, NPG-16Ocean Swell within the kinetic equation for water waves Zakharov and Badulin The authors present interesting notions about swell evolution for long durations and it seems worth publishing. Based on my considerations I recommend a major review. There are 3 important notions that should be discussed or modified in more detail. One concerns the model setup used for the numerical simulations, the second concerns the discussion of the initial swell decay for the near field, and the third concerns the role of weak winds. A major assumption, of which the consequences are not yet clear, is that swell evolution is treated as duration-limited evolution in an infinitely homogeneous ocean, which ef-

Coexistence of weak and strong wave turbulence in a swell propagation.

By performing two parallel numerical experiments-solving the dynamical Hamiltonian equations and solving the Hasselmann kinetic equation-we examined the applicability of the theory of weak turbulence to the description of the time evolution of an ensemble of free surface waves (a swell) on deep water. We observed qualitative coincidence of the results. To achieve quantitative coincidence, we au...

Swell and sea in the emerging Arctic Ocean

Ocean surface waves (sea and swell) are generated by winds blowing over a distance (fetch) for a duration of time. In the Arctic Ocean, fetch varies seasonally from essentially zero in winter to hundreds of kilometers in recent summers. Using in situ observations of waves in the central Beaufort Sea, combined with a numerical wave model and satellite sea ice observations, we show that wave ener...

Modeling Swell, High Frequency Spreading and Wave Breaking

I wish to develop the phenomenological diffusion model of interaction of gravitational waves on water surface in presence of wind and viscosity. Motivation for development of such a model is the fact that numerical solvers based on Hasselmann kinetic equation for waves are time-consuming and hardly can be used for practical purposes. Numerical solver based on the diffusion model is expected to ...

The Benjamin-Feir instability and propagation of swell across the Pacific

About 40 years ago, Snodgrass and other oceanographers (1966) tracked ocean swell propagating across the entire Pacific Ocean. At about the same time, several investigators (including Benjamin and Feir) showed that a uniform train of plane waves of finite amplitude on deep water is unstable. Comparing these two results, each of which is highly cited, leads to the following question: in light of...

Detection of microseismic compressional (P) body waves aided by numerical modeling of oceanic noise sources

[1] Among the different types of waves embedded in seismic noise, body waves present appealing properties but are still challenging to extract. Here we first validate recent improvements in numerical modeling of microseismic compressional (P) body waves and then show how this tool allows fast detection and location of their sources. We compute sources at ~0.2 Hz within typical P teleseismic dis...
